Cherries Direct delivers premium cherries direct from the cherry farm to your door from a select group of the world’s best and most committed cherry producers. In summer our cherries are grown in New South Wales and Tasmania. In winter when cherries are not produced in Australia, we import the world's finest from California and Washington State, USA.
Cherry Farm
Cherry growing by nature is an intensive and specialist endeavour, often complicated by significant climatic risk. The foundations of Cherries Direct are built on a collective experience and knowledge which spans five generations of dedicated and committed Australian and U.S. orchardists.

Only cherries of the highest quality and freshness are selected so every box opened will deliver the sweet crisp crunch and flavour that only farm direct fruit can provide.


Our Australian Cherries (available November - February)


Our early summer cherries for will be from the Young district in NSW. The Young district is located 376 km west of Sydney via the Hume Freeway and named after an early NSW Governor. Original inhabitants were the Burrowmunditory Aborigines with white settlement beginning in 1826. Rich gold discoveries (1860) were followed by fruit and grain growing. The town is now famed for its cherries that were first cultivated in 1878 by the Jasprizza and Cunich families. By 1923, Young had the world’s two largest cherry orchards as well as a diverse range of other fruit being grown such as Apples, Figs, Plums, Peaches & Nectarines.

From this time onwards, Young grew through the 1900’s to become the Cherry capital of Australia. Over the last 10 years, many of the smaller holdings and growers have retired whilst a few families have continued expand their production base to become the largest and most progressive growers in the district.

Cherries are picked and cooled to 4 Deg C. within one hour of harvest. The cherries are then packed throughout the day and despatched overnight to you.

Dark red cherries provide super antioxidants

The pigments that make these dark red cherries their stunning hue are polyphenolic flavonoid compounds known as anthocyanin glycosides. Anthocyanins are red, purple or blue pigments found in many fruits and vegetables, especially concentrated in the skin. These anthocyanins have powerful antioxidant properties.
Cherries rank among the top 20 foods with the highest concentration of antioxidants that may protect our cells from damage caused by unstable molecules, known as free radicals. Research suggests the antioxidant compounds found in cherries help our bodies fight against cancers, aging and various neurological conditions.

• A natural anti-inflammatory

Scientific studies have found that anthocyanins in cherries act like anti-inflammatory agents by blocking the actions of cyclooxygenase-1, and 2 enzymes. So, if you’ve taken up a sport or suffer from gout, arthritis, or fibromyalgia, cherries are a natural way to assist recovery from sports injuries and conditions. Cherries’ anti-inflammatory properties may also be effective in reducing heart-disease risk factors.

• Headaches and insomnia

Cherries are rich in a naturally-occurring hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain called melatonin. Melatonin crosses the blood-brain barrier and produces soothing effects on the brain neurons. At some point or other, we all experience disruptions to our sleep patterns. Eating a handful of cherries just before bed is a natural way to regulate sleep cycles, calm nervous system irritability and even help headaches.

• The Roman General Lucullus is said to have introduced cherries into Europe in 72BC, naming the cherry tree ‘Cerasus’ after a town of that name, now in Turkey.
• Broadway in New York shifts west at East 10th Street because a cherry tree once stood there.
• In 1912, Japan gifted cherry trees to America. Planted in Washington, their blooming has given rise to the world-renowned Washington Cherry Blossom Festival.
• The cherries from an average tree yield enough fruit to make 28 cherry pies.
• The world record for spitting a cherry pip – yes there truly is one – is 93ft 6.5 inches set by a Michigan resident in 2003.
• Cherries don’t ripen after harvesting.

How to store your cherries

• Cherries keep for up to 10 days if placed uncovered in the coldest part of your fridge.
• Preserve your cherries by rinsing them under cold water only when you’re ready to eat them.
• To make them last longer, avoid placing your cherries near windows, sunlit areas or warm spots in the home.

Follow these easy steps to freeze cherries

1. Rinse fresh cherries under cold water and drain thoroughly.
2. Spread cherries, complete with stems, in a single layer on a baking sheet.
3. Freeze cherries until firm, then pack frozen cherries into a plastic freezer bag or container. Remove excess air, seal and freeze, labeling each bag with the date you put them in the freezer.
4. Remove your frozen cherries as needed, but be sure to return unused cherries to the freezer immediately.


Our U.S. Cherries (available June - August)

Sourced from orchards in the Central Valley district of California to the Columbian river farms of Washington State, come some of the world’s best cherries. The orchardists in Washington State are among the pioneers of the cherry industry in the United States. Over a century ago the first acres were planted and these orchards now produce a widely recognised class of premium quality cherry - famous for its size, colour and sweetness.

The Washington State region in particular is world renowned for its ability to produce large, firm cherries with a full flavour. The Bing variety is the leading sweet cherry grown in the US today, developed in the early 1870’s.

Cherries are grown at varying altitudes allowing supply throughout the U.S. summer fruit season, which allows us to bring you this delicious fruit in the coldest Australian months. Meticulous hand picking and best practice shed handling measures ensure freshness is maintained and bruising is minimised. A complex cold chain system ensures that the end result is a crop of premium cherries.
